What - Student of the Month recipient, April 2015
Where - James Bowie High School
When - April 20, 2015
Why - She was voted SotM because she is very smart and studies a lot
How - She got the most votes out of the entire freshman class, a total of 184
Jessica, a freshman at Bowie High School, received
the SotM award April 2015 for her dedication to schoolwork and studying. She
worked for most of the school year on this achievement, and says that it
boosted her self esteem. A total of 184 freshman voted for Jessica, and she
says it made her realize how smart she was.
Although it says Month, it is actually awarded once
a year. Traditionally, the SotM winner helps out after school to tutor those in
need, free of charge.
Usually the feeling of winning SotM brings extreme
satisfaction and joy. "It felt pretty good, like being Harry Potter, the
Chosen One," said SotM Jessica.
However, some opponents of Jessica voiced different
opinions. "I believe that the election was a fraud," said Aaron
Gornsbleson, who received 178 votes.
Supporters of Gornsbleson claim that Jessica and
her friends skewed the election by exchanging the boxes where the votes where
held with ones that had more votes for Jessica. "I saw Lane Lornewallis
and Amelia Welsche-Green snooping around school with large boxes," said
Durk Cresswelle, a prominent Gornsbleson supporter.
Jessica maintains her SotM validity, claiming that
Gornsbleson frequently lies. "Aaron invited me to the Kiker Spring
Festival 2 years ago and never showed up. When I confronted him on this, he
denied involvement and just ignored me," said Jessica.
When the administration was contacted about this,
they declined comment. "Unfortunately due to the sensitive nature of the
election, I cannot disclose any information regarding voting systems,"
said Steven Kane, principal of Bowie High School.
Most of the student body was happy with this years
SotM election. "They make it very fair and open," said Brian
Salgadoreno, a freshman who voted for Jessica.
The SotM award was started 10 years when James
Smith got a perfect GPA 4 years in a row. “James was a great guy,” said his
science teacher, Mr. Rynolds.
The SotM award consists of a plaque that the winner
can hang on his or her wall. “We make it ourselves,” said Mrs. Drosslerz,
Honors Art teacher.
The design consists of a large disk made of
hardened clay taken from nearby soccer fields. “We help out by digging up the
clay every year,” said Mr. Rochersby, soccer field manager.
The Student of the Month is selected the first
Tuesday of every April.
